Too Good to be True? Just use your Common Sense…

(*) adopted this sleek-willie on ronmartin.net :-)

Spotting the Outrageous Claims is always Quite Easy..

This is a typical example of one of  those “our website is the greatest thing ever and you should advertise with us” emails that you are each receiving daily – one of our Vancouver members just received this and promptly forwarded it to us (thanks!); I am only including the opening paragraph:

My name is [..withheld.], and I am the Director of Online Accounts with [somewebsite.com]. I have just come across your website and I would love to have your services on [SomeWebsite]. We are an online wedding shopping mall in over 72 cities, with over 6000 brides shopping and booking services daily in Vancouver.

.. blah, blah… sales pitch …

OK, let’s think about this for a second…

  • There are 8,000-10,000 brides annually, in Vancouver; if you are a Vancouver vendor you already know this.
  • A number of them are second weddings, very ethnic weddings, very small weddings etc. And a number of brides are not “planning on the internet” anyway – okay, a small number :-)
  • So, let’s keep everything nice and round; let’s say that the “real” market in Vancouver, the customers available to book a Vancouver wedding vendor, is  ~ 6,000 brides annually. Sounds about right?
  • The busiest wedding planning websites in Canada are weddingbells.ca, bride.ca and Toronto’s PerfectWeddingGuide.ca – you can check on Alexa, the internet ranking service.
  • Besides those, Canadian brides primarily use Google, Facebook plus some content-rich U.S. sites like theKnot.com or blogs like StyleMePretty.com

So, what this particular operator expects you to believe is that, after Google, after Facebook, after the big, established super-busy wedding websites, after reading wedding magazines and talking to friends and attending trade-shows, after Twitter, after the Knots and the blogs… after everything else… still ..

every single bride in Vancouver, visits this particular website, at least once, every single day of the year!

Really? Seriously?

How believable does this sound to you? You don’t need me, you don’t need web “experts”, gurus and fancy technologies, analytics, tracking, statistics – just use your own judgement.

My educated guestimate: this number is “exaggerated by a factor of 3-5, at least; but the real question is : if they are “exaggerating” these numbers, what else are they “exaggerating”?

Wedding Books & Photo Album Outsourcing

Made a new friend on Twitter last week :-) Theresa Brawn running this very neat operation (from Nanaimo; but of course location is irrelevant this day and age..) producing wedding albums and storybooks for brides AND wedding photographers. So, if you want to focus on what you do best (i.e. shooting weddings!) and outsource the album layout & production to a specialist, she just may your woman!

We asked her to send us some samples (click the thumbnails above) and her “pitch”. Basically answer the question why should a wedding photographer go this route, instead of doing the work themselves? Here is what she had to say:

It can be stressful enough running a successful photography business. Before you know it you may find yourself spending more time on post production than on booking and shooting the event itself. It is these tasks that chip away at a photographers time and ultimately the profits.

Album design can take up a large amount of time and effort. It is not just the initial design but start adding up the time spent on revisions. Album outsourcing is becoming more popular as photographers realize the value of their time. While some choose to spend the time they save on other aspects of their business others choose to give some time back to their social life.

As an album designer my goal is to create albums that will stand the test of time through the design elements. I believe that producing elegant and classic designs will achieve this goal. Good designs will further enhance the photography and I strive to ensure the photographer and their clients are 100% satisfied with the end result.

CAN I REALLY AFFORD TO OUTSOURCE?

When considering whether you can afford to outsource or not ask yourself if you can afford not to. With extra time on your hands you can focus on marketing to acquire more clients, shoot more weddings/sessions, spend more time with your family or relax and take a break. My fees are very reasonable and can easily be recovered with some simple up selling or additional bookings made with the extra time.

WILL YOUR DESIGNS MATCH STYLE?

I work closely with photographers to determine what their vision is for the final outcome and strive to create designs that will compliment their photography style. I can simulate their existing designs so the clients will not notice any changes in design.

DO YOU WORK WITH INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS?

I am based in Canada but can work with photographers from around the world. All they need is an internet connection!

DO YOU SELL TO BRIDES AND FAMILIES?

Yes, as long as they have the high-resolution digital images from their event and a release from their photographer.

Will you please Stop Worrying about those iPads??

“All the brides use iPads these days, we really need an app..”

“Can’t have any flash on our sites, because of iPads”

“If you are not iPhone-friendly, you’re not in business”

Really?? I don’t think so..

Apparently everyone got an iPad or Samsung Galaxy or whatever for Christmas. So let’s see how the brides in Canada have been using the Internet since Christmas, shall we?

~ 140,000 users, on canadian bridal & wedding planning websites, for the month immediately after Boxing Day 2011

Hmm… apparently the PC stills reigns supreme!

Just because

  1. The media keeps saying so
  2. The Internet geeks keep saying so
  3. Every time you see a bride she is on a tablet (you never see them in their homes or at work, do you, only when you stop at starbucks..)

.. really does not mean that the world is being overrun by tablets :-)

Stop stressing!
